On 30 June Brazil won the final of the FIFA World Cup, against Germany, in the International Stadium in Yokohama, Japan. Brazil won the match 2–0, winning a record fifth title. They previously won the title in 1958, 1962, 1970 and 1994 and are the only team to have played in every tournament.

Two goals from Ronaldo secured the win for Brazil. He scored twice in the second half and, after the game, won the Golden Boot award for being the tournament's leading scorer with eight goals.

1835 200Just three days later Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon. He launched the 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom from Northam, Western Australia on June 19, 2002 and returned to Australia on July 3, 2002, subsequently landing in Queensland. At the end of the flight, the balloon dragged him along the ground for 20 minutes. Only the capsule survived the landing and it’s now on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Steve Fosset disappeared on September 3, 2007, while flying a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert, between Nevada and California. Extensive searches proved unsuccessful, and he was declared legally dead in February of the following year. He set numerous records in five different sports during his lifetime, sixty of which still stood at the time of his death.

2002 also saw the creation of the Hearing Aid Repair Shop (HARS). Since then, HARS have repaired thousands of hearing aids, of all makes and models, for customers from all over the world. Throughout its existence HARS has supported Mary Hare School for the deaf, as 50% of their profits go to the school.
