Troubleshooting tips

Like any piece of technology, your hearing aid can sometimes go wrong for no apparent reason! If that happens to you, try using our troubleshooting tips to fix some common problems.

My hearing aid appears to be 'dead'

  • It may sound obvious, but make sure your hearing aid is turned on
  • Make sure your hearing aid is set to the 'M' (microphone) setting
  • Check that the battery is inserted correctly, with the + and - symbols the right way round
  • Make sure the battery compartment is properly closed
  • Try replacing the battery as it may be dead
  • If you’re using behind the ear or body worn hearing aids, clean your earmould as it may be blocked

My hearing aid is making a whistling sound

  • The volume may be set too high - try reducing the volume setting until the whistling disappears
  • Your earmould may not fit properly - check that you’ve put it in correctly
  • The battery may be weak - try replacing it

The sound is distorted

  • The volume may be set too high - try reducing the volume setting until the distortion disappears
  • The battery may be weak - try replacing it

The sound is weaker than usual

  • The tubing on your hearing aid may be damaged - check the tubing for splits or moisture and replace it if necessary
