Deaf Awareness Week takes place from 15-21 May 2017. Deaf Awareness Week will celebrate the collaborative work that makes a difference for people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.
Deaf Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness that 1 in 6 people in the UK are deaf or have a hearing loss. It’s promoted by the UK Council on Deafness, who are the umbrella body for voluntary organisations working with deaf people in the UK. Their mission is to assist organisations and the sector as a whole to maximise the positive impact they have for deaf people.
Members of the UK Council on Deafness and others are united behind a common purpose and work towards:
- raising awareness
- improving access to education and employment
- making sure people have the information they need
- informing the government and the public about deafness and hearing loss
- supporting the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness
- educating people about the importance of preventing hearing loss
- improving the quality of services for people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.
Craig Crowley, Chair of the UK Council on Deafness, said: “This year’s Deaf Awareness Week is ‘A Celebration’ of collaboration and working together on a joint campaign for the benefit of people who are deaf or have a hearing loss”.
