Every year pupils and staff at Mary Hare dress up in their loudest clothes to raise funds for the Mary Hare Foundation. One of those pupils is 17 year old Emma, who’s has been a student at Mary Hare School for 5 years. Here’s her story...
“Mary Hare changed my life from the moment I walked in, as I found it unbelievable how many people were deaf or hearing impaired.
Mary Hare School has helped me with my independence. Before I came here I had to rely on someone to help me at school. I feel so much more confident, as I’m able to do all of my lessons without the help of a Teaching Assistant.
At Mary Hare, no one judges you because you’re different. Every single one of us is deaf. A lot of hearing people can’t understand what it’s like to not hear properly or not at all. But the great thing is that every child at Mary Hare knows what it’s like, as we all have one thing in common. Deafness.
I’ve made so many friends here. I have such great fun hanging out with them and doing things together, like going out in town or to the cinema. The best thing is that we feel like we’re just ordinary teenagers.
Our school slogan is ‘Set your sights high’. And we’re constantly reminded about this as, although we may be deaf, it won’t stop us from pursuing our dreams that we have for the future.”
You could make a real difference and help support the education of deaf children and young people from across the UK.
