We now use real ear measurements in all of our hearing aid fittings.
What are real ear measurements?
Real Ear Measurements are a bespoke approach to fitting hearing aids, the standard route is to follow the manufacturer's fit however at the hearing centre we want to ensure your hearing aid is personal to you. Here’s how the process works:
We place a probe and hearing aid into the ear canals. After this, a speaker plays a stimulus, which is measured by a reference microphone which sits outside of the ear canal. This ensures that the sound is at the correct intensity once it reaches the ear.
The effect of the ear and the hearing aid are then measured by the ear canal probe microphone. The software will then display the frequency response measured in the ear canal alongside the prescription target programmed in the hearing aid. This informs us as to whether we need to adjust the gain or response of the hearing aid.
As the anatomy of the ear canal is unique to each person, these measurements ensure that the hearing aid being fitted is performing its function to the best possible level. At the hearing centre we want to ensure that all hearing aids match the specific prescription, this means we will not just rely on the manufacturers fit.
How can it help you?
There are a number of benefits to performing real ear measurements over the standard manufacturers fit, the main one being the performance of the hearing aid is better.
How much does it cost?
